- Duncan's P.I.N.A.T.A. demo goes south in the season 1 finale of *The Audacity*, resulting in a shocking revelation about Jamison's father.

- Carl licenses Martin's AI therapy bot to the military, delivering a blow to Tom's fragile psyche.

- Carl considers a future partnership with Duncan, while JoAnne's insider trading side hustle finally gets the FBI's attention.

The seven episodes leading up to *The Audacity*'s season finale have been crammed with enough questions, conflicts, and conundrums to fill Hypergnosis' infinite database. Thankfully, the tech bubble satire's season 1 closer — dubbed "Granfalloon" — addresses most of them, while hooking viewers with some fresh cliffhangers that set the stage for next season.

The finale kicks off by immediately torching Tom Ruffage (Rob Corddry) and Carl Bardolph's (Zach Galifianakis) relationship. The former reluctantly participates in one of the latter's scary real World War 1 reenactments, bringing the struggling-to-stay-sober vet to his breaking point.

Carl caps the already difficult day by trying to impress Tom with his museum-like collection of historical battle dioramas, complete with a creepy mini-figure of Ruffage leading his Gulf War tank platoon. After unloading on Bardolph for his insulting, offensive, and "f---ing obscene" obsession, Tom storms out.

We next catch up with Orson (Everett Blunck), who's attempting to rekindle the flirtatious trophy case game he'd been playing with Tess (Thailey Roberge) all season. His "legendary" play sees him placing the pink pistol he stole from his mom inside the school's display. The dumb move gets plenty of attention — but not the kind he was hoping for — as the firearm is soon discovered and confiscated by Las Altas' headmaster Beatrice (Rukiya Bernard).

The panicked teen heads home and begs stepdad Gary (Paul Adelstein) for one last dose of the magic tincture he's supposed to be weening off of. Unsurprisingly, the two get into a beef, leading Orson to once again casually call Gary a "cuck." When asked why he's adopted this new nickname for him, Orson informs Gary that his wife has been doing "things" behind his back with Duncan Park (Billy Magnussen).

Orson then shows Gary how he's learned of this betrayal, taking him to the secret basement room where he eavesdrops on his mom's therapy sessions. Gary understandably assumes JoAnne (Sarah Goldbert) is having an affair with Park, so he's actually relieved when Orson tells him Park's "just" blackmailing her. Gary reluctantly gives the teen the tincture as payment for the intel.

Back at the school, Jamison's (Ava Marie Telek) crying in the headmaster's office. Based on Lili (Lucy Punch) previously telling her one-night bestie Beatrice that Jamison stole her dad's tungsten cube — coupled with the fact that Duncan smashed the trophy case to retrieve his precious collectible — the principal believes the teen must have displayed the pink pistol in the case.

Later that day, Jamison sobs in bed while her mom and dad worry about her chances of getting into Stanford if she's reported to the police. Naturally, Lili is just as concerned about how the incident will tarnish her own reputation. She's already been kicked off the school board at the behest of rival member — and school stadium-funding — Pipa Tang, who's become Beatrice's new soccer-mom bestie.

Meanwhile at JoAnne and Gary's house — which Duncan now technically owns — the two are arguing. He confronts her about the blackmail, but she brushes it off, insisting they need to get ready for Las Altas' Winter Gala, where Orson will be performing with the school's orchestra.

Speaking of the private academy's big night, the event's being held at the very same hotel hosting the WatchCode Forum, the tech convention where both Martin's (Simon Helberg) AI therapy bot and Duncan's new privacy-exploiting company P.I.N.A.T.A are set to take center stage. The shared venue sees all the series' primary players tossed into a powder keg that, as expected, explodes spectacularly before the season comes to a close.

First up, Duncan and Harper (Jess McLeod) are nervously waiting to unveil their risky venture to the world. The former gets an unexpected confidence boost, however, when he's confronted by Gary, who calls him a "sociopath" for blackmailing his wife. Gary ultimately storms off, but Duncan appreciates the insult, suggesting that Silicon Valley's venture capitalists love sociopaths.

Meanwhile, Tom — who's enjoying an amicable, but awkward reunion with Jeffery (Andrew Bushell) — is pulled away when he notices Martin having a meltdown. It seems Carl's decided to not only license out his AI bot to the military, but Alexander's therapy skills will now be used to help soldiers justify the murder they commit in battle. Bardolph's apparently based this change of heart on his falling out with Tom, as he sarcastically explains to the vet that he hopes to help soldiers who might unexpectedly "snap."

As Martin threatens legal action against Carl, Ruffage worries if the AI will still be used to assist veterans needing therapy. Making matters worse, Tom learns that his rival and former boss, General Voorhees, is involved in the new deal to put Alexander — now named "Xander" – on the frontlines. After Bardolph takes another personal dig at Carl — suggesting the bot could've spared him his "moral injury" when he killed unarmed Iraqi soldiers during the Gulf War — the frustrated vet storms off.

Anushka (Meaghan Rath) — who responds to Carl's insensitive pivot by resigning from Hypergnosis — chases after Tom. She tries to comfort him, suggesting they start a foundation for veterans funded by her and Martin. She also wants Ruffage to run the foundation. But having been burned repeatedly by Silicon Valley, he's not having it. The 38-days-sober vet heads for the bar, but is interrupted by Duncan. The tech bro has more bad news for Ruffage, as he giddily details how Carl will likely sell off all the VA's personal files to greedy pharmaceutical and insurance companies.

A quick check-in with Jamison reveals the teen has not only skipped the gala — where she was to be honored for her athleticism — but she's received word that Stanford will not be accepting her for early admission. Meanwhile, her mom is confronting Beatrice over the trophy case incident, pleading with her not to sabotage her daughter's future. But the headmaster insists her hands are tied, and she'll likely need to involve the police. Of course, Lili responds by blackmailing her, threatening to out her for accepting the principal position knowing she'd been mistakenly recruited for the job.

But it seems Beatrice is doomed anyway, as her prized  benefactor has betrayed her, backing out of the stadium donation while leaving her holding the bag… and a massive, celebratory cake meant to introduce the pricey athletic arena. This turn of events gives the crafty Lili an idea. Still looking to regain her spot on the school's board and cement her legacy, she offers to fund the project herself.

As the two team up and prepare to hit the stage — with a cake now decorated with Lili's name — Gary and JoAnne bicker in the audience. He's apparently spoken to a friend with law enforcement ties about her blackmail situation. Fearing her insider trading side hustle will be uncovered, she freaks out and insists Gary just let it go and trust her until she can sort things out. He reluctantly complies, but says he wants to know — sooner rather than later — what she's gotten herself involved in.

With that fire temporarily extinguished, JoAnne heads upstairs to the tech forum, where she hopes to watch Duncan crash and burn on stage. In addition to his former therapist, Park's other foes — Carl, Martin, Anushka, Jeffery, and Little Tim (Curtis Lum) — are also in attendance when he starts getting grilled by tech reporter Nena Marx. She immediately digs into him, accusing his new company of not only carelessly toying with millions of peoples' private data, but sharing it with "creeps and stalkers" for a price.

He counters by pointing out the good it could do, like flagging potentially dangerous suitors within dating apps. He likens his privacy-sharing plan to just another, deeper layer within a background check. But upon receiving a mixed response from the audience, he points the finger at his falsely outraged peers, suggesting they're already profiting off the population's private details, just not so blatantly.

To JoAnne's dismay, his backwards tech bro logic begins to charm the attendees. As he continues to justify what he calls the "natural progression of data sharing," he invites Harper on stage to conduct a demo. He asks for volunteers willing to have their dirty laundry dug up and projected onto the big screen behind him, prompting Carl to shout Duncan's name. The audience gets behind Bardolph's snarky suggestion, and a full-on chant builds, backing Park into a corner. He reluctantly complies — with some caveats — to mine his own family tree for the demo.

With Harper's help, they queue up Duncan's "idiot cousin" Derek Park from Toledo. Using the shamed family member's DNA, they continue the presentation, ultimately arriving at his daughter Jamison's grandparents based in Wichita. But while no incriminating data or embarrassing details accompany the couple's profile, Duncan stares at their pictures as if he's seen a ghost. He immediately tells Harper to kill the demo, before politely excusing himself from the stage. Sensing something is definitely amiss with Duncan, Carl flashes a satisfied smile.

Park bolts downstairs to the Winter Gala, where his wife is about to take the stage and bask in the glow of her new philanthropy role. Duncan approaches Lili, who enthusiastically greets him by telling him she's squashed their daughter's potential problem with the police. But Duncan, on the verge of tears, can only manage, "Is it true?"

He repeats the question, then adds, "You and Hamish… is Jamison mine?"

As her lips tremble and tears well in her eyes, Lili follows a long pause with a sorrowful, "Please."

She's then summoned to the stage, while Duncan walks away knowing what was hinted at in episode 5: Lili had an affair with her husband's deceased friend and business partner Hamish. What that episode didn't insinuate, however, was that Hamish was also Jamison's father.

As Duncan leaves the gala, he's approached by Little Tim, who makes him an offer for P.I.N.A.T.A. Despite his current mental state, Park can't help but laugh at the full-circle irony of the man who killed Cupertino's acquisition of Hypergnosis now wanting to buy the company spawned from his actions. With tears still in his eyes, he tells Little Tim to take a proposal to his boss Big Tim — "$350 million" — the same amount they were supposed to pony up for Hypergnosis.

Park then exits the hotel, where a school bus is picking up students from the event. Tess, who's on the bus rebuffing yet another apology from Orson, spots Jamison walking by. At the same time, Lili leaves her daughter a message, ensuring her everything is going to be okay. But Jamison ignores the call, heads to a train crossing, and stands on the tracks as a locomotive approaches. Tess, who'd previously had a contentious relationship with Jamison, comes to her rescue, tightly wrapping her arms around the troubled teen.

Meanwhile, Martin and Anushka are driving home from the expo when the latter receives an unexpected call. Given the shocked expression that stretches across her face, the news on the other end isn't good. This is confirmed in the very next scene, where a group of first responder vehicles occupy a suburban street. In the foreground, Tom's expo credential lanyard hangs from a chain link fence.

The next morning, we learn Jamison was safely returned home by her new friend Tess, who also stayed the night. Duncan heads to Hamish's house, where he angrily etches "f--- you too" under the spot where his friend had carved the word "sorry," a final message to Duncan that now makes much more sense.

Over at JoAnne and Gary's, Orson is confessing to his stepdad about stealing his mom's gun. Blaming the tincture "poison" for his behavior, he nervously tells Gary that he can't retrieve the weapon. He doesn't share that the gun is in the school's possession, but does insist he'll need his help getting it back. Gary freaks over the firearm being registered in his name, but he also seems to appreciate his stepson coming to him for help.

The season's penultimate scene finds Carl at his favorite haunt, sipping his morning coffee while somberly staring at his tiny Tom Ruffage diorama figure. He tucks the figurine away and waves over Duncan, who's just entered the eatery. Park sits down — in the same spot Bardolph stabbed him with a fork in episode 3 — and the pair start pondering Tom's passing.

But the ever-self-absorbed Duncan moves the conversation along, prompting Carl to interrupt with a curious detail he recalled from their time on Gabe's private island. He remembers Duncan's former friend and business partner mentioning that he'd planned to send money to Hamish's parents in Wichita, the very same folks revealed as Jamison's grandparents earlier in the episode.

"Good luck outrunning that," Carl says sarcastically.

Duncan winces, then again attempts to change the subject. He tells Bardolph all about Little Tim's potential offer, leading Carl to recognize that Duncan was playing Cupertino all along. He calls it a "hostage play," as Park's bold, new venture would essentially ruin the data-mining business for everyone, forcing Cupertino to either buy him out or shut him down.

But Duncan still feels the latter strategy could be their next move, so he makes Carl a proposition. Still seeking to be reinstalled as Hypergnosis' CEO, he offers to sell P.I.N.A.T.A to him for one dollar. Bardolph declines. Duncan doubles down, insisting they'd dominate the industry together, but need to act fast before Cupertino steps in to either buy him out or kill his career.

Carl shakes his head "no," shakes Duncan's hand, and says he'll pick up the tab for his coffee.

Defeated, Duncan disappointingly says, "We could have set the world on fire."

After Park exits, Bardolph takes a final sip from his mug, approaches the diner's tip jar, and promptly removes from it a wrinkled one-dollar bill. He then follows Duncan out the door.

Finally, we visit JoAnne one last time. She's been busy monitoring her Cayman Islands bank account — which seems to be doing quite well — while ignoring Gary's continued pleas to dig into the details of Duncan blackmailing her. With a relieved expression on her face, she shuts her laptop and answers her buzzing phone.

A woman on the other end introduces herself as an FBI agent.

"Do you have a moment to talk?" she asks.

As JoAnne's agape mouth lets out a nervous, "Umm...," the screen goes black on *The Audacity*'s debut season.
