King Charles' plan to house Prince Harry at Buckingham Palace during a September visit has exposed a growing divide between the monarch and Prince William over how to treat the estranged Duke of Sussex, royal commentators say.

It's been reported that Harry is expected to return to Britain in September, and it's believed the king intends to offer his younger son a room at the palace.

Neither Buckingham Palace nor Harry's representatives ave publicly commented on the rumored plans.

Royal broadcaster Ian Pelham Turner told Fox News Digital the accommodation offer is "a potential lifeline" for Harry and a message of "defiance" to William, who reportedly wants no further contact with his brother.

The tension follows royal author Robert Jobson's comments to Page Six that William and Harry have "different agendas," and that father and heir, while "perfectly civil to each other," disagree over the monarchy's direction.

"The problem with William is that he thinks he knows best," biographer Hugo Vickers told the outlet.

Christopher Andersen, author of The King, said William hardened his stance after Harry published his 2023 memoir, Spare.

"When it comes to Harry, William drew a line in the sand after the publication of Harry's memoir, 'Spare,' and he is disappointed that his father is not standing up for him," Andersen told Fox News Digital.

He continued, "William loves his father and appreciates better than anyone how underestimated Charles has been over the years. He wants the king to leave his mark on history. But deep down, he knows he and his family, particularly his wife, Kate, are the future of the monarchy."

"King Charles is tired," Andersen added. "He would like to have everything as it was before Megxit. But he knows how willful William is."

Broadcaster Helena Chard said William "believes the monarchy must be seen to do the right thing, even when it's painful," adding, "Charles wants healing. William and Catherine want survival and stability."

The rift dates to 2020, when Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior royals and moved to California.

On July 10, Charles and Queen Camilla quietly hosted the Sussexes at Highgrove House.

Vanity Fair's Katie Nicholl reported that "not even the Prince and Princess of Wales were made aware that the meeting was taking place."
