ā€œNo matter how much you think you know about dementia, nothing prepares you for the painfully slow disappearing of your loved one,ā€ Gabrielle wrote in an Instagram tribute

Gabrielle Union’s dad, Sylvester ā€œCullyā€ Union Jr., has died. He was 81.

Sylvester died on Friday, April 3, according to the actress in a heartfelt Instagram tribute. Her father was placed in memory care in 2023, years after he was diagnosed with dementia.

ā€œNo matter how much you think you know about dementia, nothing prepares you for the painfully slow disappearing of your loved one,ā€ Gabrielle, 53, wrote. ā€œFirst it’s repeating words or forgetting little things here or there, then BOOM, he can’t swallow or walk.ā€

ā€œThe them that you know gets smaller and smaller,ā€ she continued. ā€œYou hold out hope for sustained eye contact or a smile; even a hand squeeze can make you feel like they could come back to you 'normal' at any second. It’s brutal and it’s what he experienced, but it wasn’t who he was.ā€

The Bring It On and Riff Raff star remembered her dad as someone ā€œsurrounded by love and support from his ever-growing village.ā€

ā€œI swear he never met a stranger, just friends he hadn’t met yet. A lifelong, die-hard Nebraska fan, he taught me the values of teamwork, a fierce work ethic, and that you are only as strong as your weakest link, so tend to them first,ā€ she wrote.

Gabrielle also said Sylvester ā€œwas a perfectly imperfect man and father,ā€ adding that he ā€œacknowledged his imperfections, apologized, and made amends for as long as it took for the hurts to heal.ā€

ā€œNo one was ever left behind or unseen,ā€ she wrote.

The Forbidden Fruits star recalled her dad being the ā€œlife of every party,ā€ writing, ā€œHe loved music, traveling the world, and spending time with extended family and friends.ā€

ā€œI am grateful for all who stepped up in his final years to care, nurture, and love on him. My family and I are eternally grateful for the medical and memory care staff who ensured he had the best care. My sisters who stepped up are heroes, and I love you both beyond words,ā€ the actress said.

ā€œIt’s bewildering to feel relief that the pain has ended, but profound heartbreak at the finality of his time. I know I’m not the first or last Daddy’s girl to go through this, and I’m sending love and healing to anyone suffering the loss of a parent. I know his love is eternal and will find me in every realm,ā€ Gabrielle concluded.

In October, Gabrielle shared an Instagram carousel of photos in honor of her dad’s 81st birthday, writing, ā€œIt’s my Dad’s 81st birthday and I don’t think I’ve ever been more grateful to be his daughter.ā€

The photos showed family members — including her husband, Dwyane Wade, and her sister, Tracy Union — gathered around her father as he rested in a chair underneath a Nebraska Cornhuskers blanket.

Gabrille previously shared that her dad’s medical care has influenced her career choices, explaining, ā€œYou know, nursing homes, what’s covered by insurance, what’s not, home health aids — like that all adds up and having to really be cognizant of an additional output, I have to go where the money goes.ā€
