Drew Starkey breaks silence on [SPOILER]’s death in “Lucky”: ‘Shocking and tragic’

Drew Starkey reacted to the latest episode of Apple TV’s Lucky.
“There’s a lot packed into that episode,” the actor said about the July 29 installment.
Starkey stars alongside Anya Taylor-Joy in the crime-drama based on a novel of the same name.

Drew Starkey’s reaction to his fate in Lucky mimics that of the show’s viewers — a mixture of shock, awe, and we want more.
“It was shocking and tragic to learn about his fate,” Starkey told E! Newson Wednesday, sharing his initial thoughts about his character Cary Masterson’s death. “There’s a lot packed into that episode.”
The July 29 episode picked up where last week’s left off, a reunion between Lucky Armstrong (Anya Taylor-Joy) and her husband, Cary, after he left her stranded in Las Vegas stealing millions of dollars in cash. Despite the obvious tension between them, there was no love lost between the couple as they decided to go on the run together. Cary did apologize for leaving Lucky out of the loop when it came to his plan — which was to initially give the money to his mob leader mother, Priscilla (Annette Bening). But he decided to just take the millions and run.
Their catch-up was ultimately interrupted by the FBI. After successfully evading the FBI (more on that in a second) the pair came face-to-face with Priscilla, who attempted to get them to come with her. Lucky and Cary declined the ominous invitation and stole their own car instead. The FBI caught on, meaning the couple was now involved in a car chase with the authorities and Priscilla.

The episode took a hard left into an action film as Lucky and Cary worked their hardest to stay together and get away from both parties in pursuit. But their luck did, unfortunately, run out.
“It was like shooting a short play for the two of us, which was amazing,” Starkey told E! News about the moments before Cary took his final breath. However, the scene was “quite intense” for him and Taylor-Joy

Cary’s decision to pull out a gun and get in a shootout with the authorities might have been his first mistake. Lucky lost control behind the wheel when a bullet shot out one of their tires, causing her to crash the car. Lucky woke up to find Cary bleeding out next to her after having been shot. She kissed him on the head before fleeing the scene.
“It was an incredible experience,” Starkey continued on Wednesday. “You see these two characters start off in a very, very hostile place, and then by the end they’re saying that they don’t regret being with each other still—and they still have this love for each other.”
The Outer Banks star added, “It’s tragic to see him, once that’s finally reached, then he’s gone again.”

Taylor-Joy, who played Starkey’s counterpart in Lucky (based on the novel of the same name by Marissa Stapley), previously revealed that she had no plans to do the show unless he was on board.
“I fought very hard for Drew to be in this show,” Taylor-Joy said in an interview earlier this month. “I knew he was our Cary, and I think what you bring to it—which is so beautiful—is you have this ability to be very vulnerable whilst wrapped in a lot of strength, and this character needed to be somebody that the audience would not only miss, but also want to hear him out after he does something which is technically unforgivable — and I think Drew has that.”
